Posh n Becks
that seems to be the way the american media have dubbed one of the world’s most famous couples now that they’ve arrived in Los Angeles. Beckham was officially unveiled as the newest player for the Los Angeles Galaxy yesterday. He’ll bring his Madrid number 23 across the Atlantic with him.
Along with his introduction to the club, the Los Angeles have adopted new team colors of gold, white, and blue. The change in team colors surprised me, as I thought they’re most recent kit had one of the best looks and color schemes in all of MLS. I think a change in the name of the club would have been a better choice to coincide with Becham’s arrival. Since the beggining of MLS trends have shown the league’s popularity has grown as the league has more closely aligned itself with international soccer standards and traditions. The Galaxy should have taken a cue from MLS rivals FC Dallas, and adopted a more classic name for the club, particularly in preparation for their upcoming clash with English powerhouse Chelsea FC.

The american advertising machine has wasted no time in capitalizing on Los Angeles’ newest residents. Victoria Beckham is to be the subject of a reality television series, and David is already the focus of two commercial campaigns with more in the pipeline. I’ve previously mentioned the adidas campaign in which Becks features with USC/New Orleans Saints star Reggie Bush, and ESPN has recently launched a series of commercials to draw attention to Los Angeles/MLS games, all of which ESPN owns the rights to.
ESPN will be looking to capitalize on Beckham building soccer in America, as they already have purchased the rights to the 2007 and 2009 FIFA under 20 World Cups, the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup, UEFA Euro 2008, and the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups. Most sporting purists would frown upon this blatant commercialization, I can only be happy to see more soccer coming to my home country, and thank Mr. Beckham for being so darn cute, that he finally got American companies to seriously invest in the sport.
