iPhone Weirdness

I managed to put my iPhone onto some weird states yesterday on the walk home. Below are a few screenshots I was able to get.

The first is a keyboard stuck over the home screen. I assume something went awry between the home screen and spotlight search. The phone was stuck like this for a couple minutes.

Next is a screenshot of the white flash that is displayed on screen when you take a screenshot. I was aware you would somehow be able to take a screenshot of the screenshot taking process but my phone didn’t explode so I guess it’s OK.  [update: this just looks like blank space, but I swear there's an image there.]

The third image is my iTunes library completely blank. This was strange because it seemed like all the spacing was correct (as of my music was still listed) but all the names were just blank.

I also was on the Now Playing screen showing the album cover of the Arctic Monkeys album I was listening to and when I hit the back button I was shown the track listing for the Kings of Leon album I had been listening to in the morning. That was also weird but you can’t really take a screenshot of that.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen your iPhone do? Is anybody else’s home button just not really working anymore? I have an iPhone 3G I bought on release day and I pretty much have to hit the home button three times to get it to work.

  1. If I try and make a genius playlist from certain songs the ipod part of my iphone 3Gs crashes. The screen goes black then goes to the home screen. I haven’t figured out why, but it’s pretty annoying. So far I’ve found that Johnny Cash and Bob Marley both crash it.

Also, my phone got stuck in the triple-tap zoom mode for a while, which was really confusing. I even reset the whole phone trying to fix it before finally finding an article somewhere explaining what happened.

  2. You can consistently get it to kill the iPod process (return to the home screen) by trying to make a genius playlist from Johnny Cash or Bob Marley? My initial thought was to wonder if there’s some issue with the metadata for your Johnny Cash or Bob Marley files but I don’t know enough about how genius operates to understand why that would cause a problem, though it still seems like a reasonable guess.

    What is triple-tap zoom mode?

  3. Yep, any time I choose a song by either of those artists it kills the process. I don’t think it’s a metadata thing, because I bought the Johnny Cash off iTunes, so I would think it should be correct. I also don’t think that I’ve seen either of those artists on Genius, so maybe its something with how my genius is logged.

If you double-tap with three fingers (not triple-tap, like I said, its a three finger tap) the iPhone zooms in on the area tapped. You can zoom in/out by double tapping and immediately scrolling up or down with three fingers. But if you get into this mode accidentally (i.e. without realizing you’ve three finger double tapped), it can be pretty strange.

  4. I just checked my iTunes and making a genius playlist using either of those artists works fine, so it’s definitely something to do with the iPhone.
